The C.O.D.E.: Affirmations for Walking in the Jesus Way

Throughout the ages, Christian communities have embraced a “Rule of Life,” or discipleship pattern, in order to walk with Jesus together in their life and mission. Here the word “rule” comes from the Latin regula and is where we get the word regulate, like a pendulum regulates a grandfather clock. Basically, it’s a spiritual rhythm for life together in Christ. Regula is also the root word in Latin for thread, with the Rule of Life being a “common thread” for a community. By grabbing onto this thread, we are able to walk together in Christ and grow together as a Kingdom community. The following “Rule of Life,” or discipleship pattern, is intended to help us in our common pursuit of our life mission. This rule of life consists of the following three elements: affirmations from Scripture for daily reflection and prayer, spiritual disciplines we commit to embrace, and daily and weekly rhythms for engaging God in these disciplines.\nThis Rule of Life is called The C.O.D.E. – and is an acronym for Christians Observing Disciplines Everyday. It is also short-hand for “genetic code” – the very basic building blocks of who we are as disciples of Jesus. It all flows from two summary passages of Scripture often referred to as The Great Commandments (Matthew 22:34-40), and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Jesus is calling us into a way of life, going beyond simply believing in God, to embracing His Lordship in our lives and receiving all the benefits of His Kingdom rule (Luke 4:16-21). The C.O.D.E 90-Day Devotional assists the disciple of Jesus as they seek to more fully and effectively embrace His way, and deepen their relationship with the Lord. The C.O.D.E. Devotional is a collaborative effort by eight different pastors from five different churches who all have a common desire to see more people grow in their relationship with Jesus, and become more empowered to live His way.
