Dolores
Description:
One of the lesser-known novels of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Dolores, represents a milestone in her narrative production. Wanting to transport us to a time quite antecedent to hers in order to relate the true story, or at least the most credible, of one of her relatives, the author embarks on a narrative that conflicts with the deep-seated customs and traditions of conservative Spanish society, and particularly with the institution of pre-arranged marriages between families without the bride and groom’s consent or even against their wishes. Nor are class prejudices of anti-Semitism or social condition shown in a very good light. The novel constitutes as well, a sort of family chronicle in which the author inserts herself into the story she is telling as well as the history of Spain and its early national development.
