Three white crosses along a lonely stretch of county highway are stark testimony to the tragedy that befalls weekly newspaper publisher, Preston "Press" Williams, as the result of his investigation into a coffee shop rumor in the small community of Fremont. The local rumor wire has it that the mayor has been picked up for drunk driving for at least the third time but a recheck of the police log finds no mention of it. It quickly becomes clear that shenanigans are dancing in the cop shop and the police chief operates from both sides of his badge.
