Description:
Augustus Griffin was born before the American Revolution and died after the Civil War. For most of his long life he was a schoolteacher, shopkeeper, and innkeeper in Oysterponds (today's Orient and East Marion), a small agricultural and maritime community on the eastern end of Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. He was also a devoted diarist. The present volume offers an intimate record of daily life during a particularly challenging and transformative period of American history and is a must for anyone interested in the history of Long Island.
