“What Heaven Left Behind” tells the story of the author’s struggle to find meaning in life as people she loves die around her, leaving her in despair ― and with more money than she ever expected, or wanted. The inheritance allows this single parent to leave her workaholic life at the newspaper, travel to Hawaii, and buy whatever she wants ― even a new convertible ― on a whim. But the money can’t cure the pain and grief that threaten to swallow her. Eventually she discovers what her parents always knew: That real wealth comes from what you give away. So she creates something called AngelWorks, and begins investing herself and her family’s money in efforts to ease the suffering of others. Since she created it in October 2003, AngelWorks has touched thousands of lives ― and saved at least one: her own.
