Deborah Butterfield

Published on the occasion of the artist's 2009 solo exhibition at L.A. Louver Gallery, Deborah Butterfield offers a unique portrait of the artist's work, as well as of the landscape and forms from which she derives her inspiration. An intimate interview by Lawrence Weschler provides insight into Butterfield's philosophy and process, while personal photography by the artist of her studios in Montana and Hawaii, her horses, and sculptures at various points of making allows an unprecedented glimpse into her creative environments. Detailed photos and installation shots of new sculpture from her gallery exhibition (April 9 - May 9, 2009), along with images of works represented by L.A. Louver over the course of Butterfield's association with the gallery, give a further view of the scale, scope and methods with which the artist conveys her powerful works of abstract figuration.
