Taken from the diary of Thomas C. Quackenboss, this work was written as he toured Asia in 1937. Quackenboss traveled on assignment as a photographic journalist for the Chicago Times while accompanying Dr. William Montgomery McGovern, and expert on foreign relations and a Navy Reserve officer with U.S. Navy Intelligence. McGovern, a talented linguist and brilliant political analyst, maintained important political connections throughout Asia and Europe. On their journey, he introduced Quackenboss to the politics, culture and history of Asia.This diary is an enthusiastic and detailed portrayal of the people, places and politics he encountered during a time when the world was on the brink of war.
