Asian Dreams

Photographer Robert Curran traveled to Hanoi in 1998 to document a meeting between Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap, Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnamese Army under Ho Chi Minh, and JFK, Jr., who was then heading George magazine. This two-week photo assignment unfolded into a four-month safari, which led Robert to the most remote regions of the Far East. ASIAN DREAMS captures that journey and adds to it a selection of Robert’s images of a prior trip to Vietnam and Burma in 1991. Scenes of European skulls from the killing fields in Cambodia are interspersed with images of weddings from Bali and tribes people from Northern Vietnam. Together, these photographs document Asia’s social and religious diversity, and chronicle the aftermath of war and economic upheaval in the region.
