Description:

Scott Peterson takes ice houses as his subjects. Rejecting a traditional documentary approach, the artist does formal studies of these vernacular structures and stark, static and silent landscapes. According to Peterman, the shacks "are entirely utilitarian in their purpose, yet put together in surprisingly ingenious ways, appearing as crude minimalist sculpture." Reminiscent of works by Ed Rusha, Dan Graham, and Sol LeWitt, these large-scale color photographs effectively convey the experience of being alone in a vast and empty vista. Scott Peterson was born in Pennsylvania in 1968. He received an MFA, Photography (Ward Cheney Memorial Award Recipient) in 1998 from the Yale University School of Art and a B.A., Philosophy, University of New Hampshire in 1991. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the United States. Forthcoming will be an exhibition at Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York.
