Description:

The Strength of Her Spirit is a novel of the indomitable spirit and courage of the Martin Handcart Company. In 1856, Brighan Young called on all Mormans to come to America to "the Promised land" in Utah's Salt Lake Valley. Like the Gold Rush's gold seekers, who used handcarts instead of the traditional covered wagons and teams to transport them, converts from all over the world used this cheaper mode of transportation and the monies from the Emigrating Fund to come to a land where they were free to worship as they chose. Englishman Gilbert Morgan and his family join the Martin Handcart Company in Iowa City, Iowa to travel across the mountains to the place they would soon call home. The Morgans know the trip will be hard, but they and the rest of the group are ill-prepared for what awaits them. They soon face a test of faith greater then they ever imagined. Traveling on foot, their meager belongings loaded into small inadequate handcarts, they begin their walk along the treacherous trail that will lead them to salvation or death.
