Poetry for the Common Man: Classical or Modern Serious or Not
Description:
While writing poetry is not the top priority of my life. It does provide an outlet for ideas that I would otherwise overlook. Poetry can say something in far fewer words in many ways than a short story or even the full length novel can. It does, however, take a bit on inspiration to sit with pencil in hand, a blank piece of paper and write something beautiful that everyone can understand and appreciate and yet at the same time make it rhyme and maybe even be in meter. In these pages I have hopefully created ideas that are understood and may in some way bring a smile or tear to your eye. We read so much today in the newspapers and see even more on the television sets throughout our homes and our lives that sometimes it is gratifying just to sit and listen to the gentle breeze as it flutters the leaves in the trees outside our windows. There are two humming birds in my neighborhood. They are interesting in what they do. They flutter their little wings and inspect their surroundings to find sweetness and little else. Are they important? Do they create headlines worthy news interests? Of course not. They are as innocent as what we refer to as "the driven snow. In their own little way though, they create an interest. How do they manage to flutter their wings and hover in a single place? Poetry is like that in many ways. Poets flutter their pens, like the birds flutter their wings. We may be going nowhere like the humming birds, but sometimes, just sometimes we write something that might turn out as beautiful as the little humming bird. And maybe that's all we ask.
