Emerita is the story of a little girl s journey by ocean liner from a Caribbean island to the United States to begin a new life with relatives in New York City. The story is recalled by her granddaughter. Emerita was inspired by the author s grandmother who came from Puerto Rico many years ago. Emerita received a Runner Up Award at the DIY Book Festival and Honorable Mention in four very prestigious contests: The 2009 San Francisco Book Festival, the 2008 International Latino Book Awards, the 2008 New York Book Festival and the 2008 Hollywood Book Festival.
