Flight deck: A pictorial essay of a day in the life of an Airdale, with first-person commentary
Description:
This book, "Flight Deck", while presumably of interest in one way or another to all those above the age of ten, is primarily intended for those of the high school/college age-group (because it's written about just such a person). The author spent his 18th and 19th years on an aircraft carrier during 1945-1946 as an Airdale (he who worked with and among the aircraft during and after launch and landing operations). This book contains 358 pictures derived from the official U.S. Navy collection housed in the National Archives, with each picture filling most of the 81/2 by 11 inch page. Each picture has its own page of text devoted to an explanation of the contents of the picture, along with the comments of a young sailor's thoughts and feelings during these times. This 776 page book describes all the activities that an Airdale experienced on the flight deck of a large aircraft carrier: Forward, Prologue, Introduction, The Ship and Aircraft, External Activities, Launching Activities, Landing Activities, Mishaps, Parking Activities, Enemy Action, Epilogue, Closing Thoughts. A following book of 390 pictures will have full-page text with ½ describing the picture contents and ½ discussing personal social issues (ethics, values, self-esteem, honor, commitment, duty, loyalty, etc., etc.) vis-a-vis the Airdale.
