Fray Leon Alastray, ex-soldier now Franciscan missionary, finds his first mission, San Sebastian, along the tributary of the Rio Grande, devastated by Comanche Chief Golden Lance in the late 1700s. He has to instill in his people a desire to rebuild and prepare for the inevitable return of Golden Lance. Slowly the soldier takes the place of the Franciscan, and he has to face a crisis when Golden Lance returns: Is he a son of Cortez or of St. Francis? With a naturalist's eye, the author describes the hauntingly beautifuly Southwestern country. He takes his reader on a tour of Acoma, the sky city, and other memorable New Mexican villages. Second Edition.
