AUTHCOMMENT: The Mayan Series began in 1984 with a trip to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Prior to the development of Cancun as a tourist area in the 1980s and its amalgamation with Mexico, Quintana Roo had experienced little growth or change. Consequently, some of the people in the remote villages I visited spoke only Maya. I discovered ritual that was still strongly connected to the pre-Hispanic Mayan civilization. I found strong-willed, gentle people going through tremendous change as foreign wealth and capital were drawn to the area by tourism. I wanted to document how change was affecting these warm people in this vibrant land full of light and brilliant color.
