David Wanklyn, born in Montreal in 1924 into a prominent family, considers himself lucky to have had a good start in life. He did well in school and interrupted his education at McGill to join the Army. After the war, he resumed his education at McGill, continuing as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and completing a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics at McGill in 1953. He moved to Kingston with his wife, Patience, in 1981
