Grandmother Mary

Grandmother Mary, by Elizabeth Uhlig, is an illustrated children’s book that depicts the life of an historical grandmother spoken from the viewpoint of her neighbor. Grandmother Mary is the little girl who was given away by her mother during WW II and sent to live with her wealthy aunt in the hope that she would someday have a better life. How Mary lives her life as a result of being given away teaches children important lessons: the value of family history, the wisdom of their elders, and love as a way to soothe the loneliness of growing up. It also deals with the themes of death in the family, the passage of time and the unavoidable changes we must all face at some time in life.
