Nurturing Native Languages

The sixth in a series of monographs published by Northern Arizona U. on the revitalization of indigenous languages and cultures, this text includes papers from the eighth, ninth, and tenth annual "Stabilizing Indigenous Languages" conferences held in 2001, 2002, and 2003. The text includes keynote speeches from the 2001 conference, followed by 14 essays discussing the use of immersion programs in schools, the use of technology in language classrooms, and current efforts among indigenous peoples to reclaim their linguistic and cultural heritages. The majority of the articles are written by North American specialists writing about North American Indigenous languages and cultures; one article, written by Jeanette King (U. of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand), examines aspects of Maori language and culture.
