This book takes on the interesting and intrigueing problem of gender distinction. Winifred, the viewpoint character, is born with a syndrome in which her chromosomes are male but her genitalia are female. In attempting to cope with her physical and psychological difficulties, she attempts to live as a male for a time in Wyoming. Here she is drawn into a boxing match where she is thought to be a man. The novel explores the trials of Winifred as she learns to deal with her physical and psychological problems, some of which are revealed to her during her boxing match. The book has features in common with several books recently written by women who have found the sport of boxing helpful in their lives.
