Vineyard Voices: Word, Faces & Voices of Island People

Oral historian Linsey Lee here collects the conversations of long-time residents of Martha's Vineyard -- a sea-swept island seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They are farmers, fishermen, boat builders and summer people; they live in fierce harmony with the land, the sea and each other. Their stories -- recollections of a hundred years of island life -- are of shipwrecks, race relations, ice cutting, rum running, and one-room schoolhouses. The Vineyard today is a fast-changing place. A way of life that has continued for generations is disappearing. These stories remind us of what is special about the place.
