Four hundred years ago, the Protestant Reformation stimulated a "rediscovery" of the Bible and several of its significant doctrines. These doctrines conflicted with the teachings of the time by affirming that salvation is by grace alone with no contribution by man. Consequently, these doctrines became known as "the doctrines of grace."
