Dorothy Welker began her pre-med courses at the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1923. She graduated from the U of I College of Medicine in 1931, one of only four women. Dubbed a Hen Medic by her male classmates, Dorothy's fight against gender prejudice was just the beginning. With well-bred grace and a little bit of chutzpah she shattered the stereotype of the Hen Medic to become a successful and highly respected pediatrician.
