A Short Life on A Sunny Isle

Inspector Dantan, on vacation on a primitive Spanish island where a friend of his wife's has gone to paint, is asked by the colony of expatriates to investigate the murder of a young local girl for which the local police suspect a young local man. All the foreign artists and writers, loungers living on independent incomes, think the police's suspect is innocent.
