During the 1780s, the pioneers of Western North Carolina wanted to set up a new state called Franklin in the area we know today as East Tennessee, but their efforts to convince the Continental Congress failed. A militia battle near Johnson City settled the matter. Two strong-willed men, John Sevier and John Tipton, led the pro and con factions.
