The first edition of this book evolved regarding the mutual lack of respect between breeders and veterinarians. Breeders gain much medical knowledge about their breed through discussions at dog shows and other venues. We hoped to combine the best information available to both groups into one definitive book.

With the advent of blood testing for genetic disorders, veterinarians will be better able to diagnose the problems, but with 39 chromosones pairs in the canine, as compared to 23 pairs in the human, progress will be more difficult.
