Vividly portraying the boredom of camp life as well as the horror of battle, the story follows Joseph Crowell from his enlistment in the 13th New Jersey Regiment in the summer of 1862 through May of 1863 when he was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville. The Young Volunteer would be a fine addition to any Civil War book collection.
