Africanus traveled extensively & he went on to become a great African navigator, pilot, map-maker, explorer, scholar & diplomat. The last part of the 14th century he translated his nine books, descriptions of Africa into four European languages: French, Latin, Spanish & Italian. The nine book, description of Africa was compiled from his many trips into the interior of Africa: the nine-book & the descriptions of Africa were originally written in Arabic. It was commissioned in 1600 by Queen Elizabeth the First of England, so Mr. John Pory could translate them into English. A GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORIES OF AFRICA is a critical tool, a springboard from which to measure the transformation of the African continent: Luther Jones' revised edition of this classic text emerges at a critical period in African history & at a time of rising awareness of a cultural identity among people of African heritage.
