When he was converted to Christianity his name was changed to John Leo Africanus after Pope Leo the Tenth. He graduated from the University of Fez in 1841. Africanus traveled extensively & he went on to become a great African navigator, pilot, map-maker, explorer, scholar & diplomat. The last part of the 14th century he translated his nine books, descriptions of Africa into four European languages: French, Latin, Spanish & Italian. The nine book, description of Africa was compiled from his many trips into the interior of Africa: the nine-book & the descriptions of Africa were originally written in Arabic. It was commissioned in 1600 by Queen Elizabeth the First of England, so Mr. John Pory could translate them into English.
