She takes the steamer from New York to Panama, crosses the Isthmus, and proceeds to Sacramento. Enroute she befriends an orphaned girl and a young seaman with consumption. She also falls in love, in spite of herself, with a handsome plantation owner. The story is set against the rich background of the Panama Crossing in 1849, and filled with authentic early California history.
