The Adventures of a Young Swiss in California: The Gold Rush Account of Theophile De Rutte

This account was first published in 1979 in Paris, excerpted from manuscripts left by the author. Theophile de Rutte, who came to the Americas in 1846. He spent the first three years in Rio de Janeiro, working as a branch manager for a Swiss company in Europe. Once news of the discovery of gold in California arrived, he set out with his friend Tissot, arriving in San Francisco with a supply of goods from his employers to sell in California. This edition covers the time de Rutte spent in California, detailing his many adventures, and providing a fresh look at the Gold Rush through the eyes of a lively young Swiss, who witnessed fires, floods, and toured the mining area. He returned to Europe in 1856, where he spent the rest of his life as a successful businessman in Bordeaux.
