Description:
Built in Queensland, HMAS Diamantina went to war at Bougainville in 1945, then was the venue for the Japanese surrenders at Nauru and Ocean Island. From 1959-80, Diamantina, in conjunction with bodies like CSIRO, carrried out oceanographic research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and also trained thousands of Navy recruits. Decommissioned in 1980, HMAS Diamantina is now a major attraction at Queensland's Maritime Museum located on the Brisbane River.
