The British School at Athens admitted its first student in 1886. The subsequent thirty years saw a shift towards scientific and professional archaeology. The School developed a number of major projects: the Cyprus Exploration Fund; Megalopolis; Phylakopi on Melos; Laconia (and Sparta); Crete (Praisos, Palaikastro). Its members were also involved in the epigraphic surveys of the Asia Minor Exploration Fund. Many of the students who gained the experience of excavating in Greece were to work in the Levant, Egypt, India and Britain.
