Imam Nawawi says in the preface: "The Purpose of this book is to make clear to you how to travel this path. It will show you how to take on the excellent qualities I have described. Allah willing, I will mention some of the pearls and realities of Gnostics. It will be composed in such a way so as not bore the reader and so as to render its subject matter easy to remember. Allah willing I will quote some of the uplifting sayings of the salaf."
