Gideon Mendel is widely regarded as one of the world's leading contemporary photojournalists. Born in Johannesburg in 1959, he studied psychology and African history at the University of Cape Town. He photographed change and conflict in South Africa in the lead up to Nelson Mandela's release from prison, working with Agence-France Presse, and as a correspondent of Magnum Photos. In 1990 he moved to London and joined Network Photographers, documenting social issues globally, and in particular in Africa. He has been addressing the subject of AIDS in Africa since 1993 for which, among many other awards, he won the Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography in 1996.
