Exiles

In this compelling novel, Claire is a young geologist working in Tunisia, while her partner sends her postcards from a damp, cold flat in London. John is Irish and the wrong religion; he is missing the way she messed up his life. She writes back, "Tunisia is warm, full of the bright colors of the desert. The smell of rain on the dry earth." But she doesn't mention Ali—she doesn't think John would understand.
