All of these 'groups' operated on the basis of speculation, aiming to create the illusion that a 'movement' that bore their name actually existed ... The `avant-garde' has long denied its `avant-garde' status because it does not wish to acknowledge the ebb and flow of its own discontinuous `tradition'.
