Amateur soldiers: A history of Oldham's volunteers and territorials, 1859-1938

This work chronicles the creation of the volunteer unit and territorial battalions that became the 10th Manchesters. The author describes "th'owd Tenth's" role as an infantry battalion during the Great War and the ensuing interwar years. Using contemporary sources, the book details the 1st Battalion's gruelling training in Egypt and its bloody encounters on Gallipoli and the Western Front. The ill-fated attempt, by the 2nd/10th, to conquer the shell-swept slopes of the infamous Passchendaele Ridge is also covered.
