Caught in Time: Photographs of Alex Hogg of Belfast, 1870-1939

The photographs of Alex Hogg are without equal in Ireland both for their quality and the range of their subject matter. Almost every aspect of Ulster life between 1900 and 1939 is illustrated. He photographed people, both rich and poor, at work and at leisure, as well as the countryside and busy city scenes. As a professional photographer he received commissions to work at the harbour and shipyards, in factories and offices, at hotels and eating places, theatres and cinemas. This fine collection reveals more about social and industrial history at a time of great change than could be expressed in many thousands of words.
