Signs of Jays
Description:
Pete and his mother rescue two abandoned jays. Caring for the baby birds became a project for Pete, Mike, who was deaf, and for Pete's mother's hearing impaired class students. The children cared for the birds and helped them transition to the big outdoor world. When summer came, they flew away. The children had helped them 'mainstream' to the world just as Mike, with an interpreter, mainstreamed to Pete's regular education class at summer's end. Reading Signs of Jays together and learning some of the 24 signs included throughout the book and in the glossary may open areas of understanding and provide opportunity for discussion with friends and siblings. Hearing impaired children and other special needs children who use signs are often included in regular education classrooms.
