Begin in English, Volume 1: Vocabulary-Expanding Short Stories for Launched Beginners includes fourteen easy, delightful short stories and plays which can be read in or out of the classroom by advanced primary level adolescent and adult students of English. They have all been field-tested. The intent is to maximize independent learning while minimizing the teacher's help. The vocabulary is highly controlled and useful for beginners' conversation. Please note the comprehensive, referenced word list at the back of the book. Vocabulary expansion, a major focus, is promoted by teaching and encouraging use of the foreign student's own bilingual dictionary of the native speaker's English dictionary. A simple step-by-step dictionary lesson is included for that purpose. Present tense and the future, with "going to," are used throughout the reader, as these are generally stressed during the primary levels. This is not a grammar book. The exercises here test reading comprehension and offer plenty of opportunities for writing and discussion, as well.
