Description:
The four series of 20th-century United States gold coins are, without question, the most popular and widely collected of all United States gold coins. Relatively few people have the interest, tenacity and wherewithal to try and complete series of other United States gold coins but a surprising number of people are currently at work on one or more of the 20th-century series. There are a number of valid reasons for this. First, the series are all relatively short. The Indian Head quarter eagle series consists of only 15 coins, the half eagle series just 24 coins. The Saint-Gaudens eagle and double eagle series, although somewhat larger, still contain only 32 and 54 coins respectively.A second factor is the attractiveness of the designs. The Bela Lyon Pratt designed quarter eagle and half eagle are very distinctive and unique among all United States coins with their incuse (sunken) devices; and, of course, the two Saint-Gaudens designs are generally considered to be among the most beautiful United States coins of any denomination ever issued.
