Description:
The North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NCBRC) hosts the internationally acclaimed, biennial National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF). This year’s festival also marks the 25th anniversary celebration of the NCBRC. The book is the first pictorial history of the NCBRC. The NCBRC is the first professional Black theater company in North Carolina, located in Winston-Salem. Founded in 1979 by Larry Leon Hamlin, the NCBRC has over the years continued to serve as one of the premier Black theater companies in the United States with its roots firmly planted in the ongoing struggle for Black liberation. The book highlights many of the performances over the years and the celebrities who have lent their talents to entertain and expand awareness of the work of black theatre actors, playwrights, and directors. Larry Leon Hamlin-Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of both the Company and the Festival, wrote the introduction to the book. The publisher, Richard Koritz, states, “As a North Carolina-based publishing house, Open Hand is especially excited to participate in this collaboration with the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, as the group is such a rich element of North Carolina’s cultural and artistic history.” Dr. McMillan’s book, The North Carolina Black Repertory Company: 25 Marvtastic Years, is the first book solely devoted to the group.
