Only 35 students were enrolled at the time at Cal, which had been chartered in 1868 after opening its doors as Contra Costa Academy in 1853 in Oakland. By 1877, however, there was enough interest in the sport on campus to warrant a clash between the freshmen and the sophomores for the class championship.
