A Living Legacy: Historic Architecture of the East Bay

Beginning with a brief overview of the history and development of architecture in the East Bay from 1800 to 1950, this book offers a series of keyed maps with descriptions, and numerous photographs of the more than 1,500 historic buildings covered in the self-guided tours.

Most of the structures included have never been mentioned in any other text. You can use the descriptive, illustrated guide to the various styles of architecture that were popular in the area before 1950 to recognize the general types of historic buildings found in the East Bay. And, if you are a more serious student, in the appendices you will find a suggested reading list of books available in East Bay libraries on major architectural styles and movements, a glossary of architectural terms, information on local architectural or historical organizations and references, and a supplemental list of buildings by First Bay Tradition architects which are not included in the self-guided tours.
