Quirky, tragic and maddening by turns, Margot Wingfield is something of a mystery to those around her: her admirers, her therapist, her husband, perhaps even herself. Questing through religion, 'psycho-synthesis' and her craft of play-wrighting, she seems now and then on the verge of marvellous insight. Yet the verge is perilous, and she is ever in danger of pitching over into inexplicable nihilism.
