Description:

Beginning in 1966, the Santa Fe and New York Central began a run-through freight service which bypassed Chicago's rail yards. This black and white pictorial showcases the trains as they move off the Santa Fe at Streator, Illinois and operate via the Kankakee Belt Route to Elkhart, Indiana on the Chicago-New York mainline. This arrangement continued even after the creation of Penn Central and Conrail. The run-throughs eventually expanded to 6 or 7 trains a day including the NY-LA Trailvan. From GP20s and U25Bs to Dash 2s, U33Cs and B23-7s, from piggypacks and steel trains to local peddlers, take a look at the motive power in a granger setting far removed from the usual scenes. 96 pages.
