Modern Masters of Kyoto: The Transformation of Japanese Painting Traditions, Nihonga from the Griffith and Patricia Way Collection

Published in conjunction with the exhibition beginning in August 1999 at the Seattle Art Museum, this volume presents about 80 examples of Kyoto nihonga hanging scrolls, screens, and an album dating from the 1860s to the 1940s. Following an introduction and essays by Morioka and Berry (scholars specializing in Japanese art), the text and color plates feature two exceptionally original artists, Tsuji Kato and his pupil Tomita Keisen, as well as works by their predecessors, their contemporaries, and their successors.
