Description:
We continue to be pleased with the wide use of this book for preparing extemporaneous drug formulations within the US as well as abroad. A total of 280 extemporaneous formulations are provided for potential use in infants and children. Formulations have been added to this edition. Although these formulations are primarily used in pediatric patients, some have also been used in adults who have difficulty in swallowing tables or capsules, such as elderly patients or those with dysphagia. Considering the worldwide need, we have provided multiple formulations of certain drugs. Some ready-to-use vehicles like Ora-Plus or Ora-Sweet are readily available in the US, but not in many other countries. In that situation, an extemporaneously prepared methyl-cellulose 1% suspension with syrup may be used in place of Ora-Plus and Ora-Sweet. Ready-to-use Hypromellose or SnoTears are available in certain countries, but not in the US. The need for extemporaneous formulations continues to exist. A recent survey of hospital pharmacists serving pediatric populations found that 76 drug formulations had adequate drug stability information. However, additional stability data were required for 109 drug formulations had adequate drug stability information. However, additional stability data were available for an additional 103 medications used in infants and young children.
