It is 1912 and the five daughters of an immigrant family living on New York’s Lower East Side are growing up in a home poor in income but rich in affection. The small problems that can deeply trouble a childlike the loss of a library cardare overcome in the context of an understanding and caring family; and the hopes of these girls as to careers, weddings, and adulthood in general are lovingly described.
