The years spent listening to and writing about jazz and Afro-Caribbean music have led to an awareness of the value of that music, and of poetry in alignment with it. The Cuban musicologist Fernando Ortiz wrote: "It isn't a music of 'entertainment' at the edge of daily life; it is a precise aesthetic version of all of Life in its transcendental moments."
